Our curriculum is designed to combine classic barbering techniques with modern trends, giving students the expertise needed to succeed in today’s competitive grooming industry. You’ll receive hands-on training in cutting, styling, and shaving techniques, as well as facial hair grooming and beard design. With an emphasis on precision, safety, and sanitation, our program prepares you to provide top-tier services while mastering the art of barbering.

Barbering Student Objectives

  • Master Traditional and Modern Barbering Techniques: Gain hands-on proficiency in classic and contemporary hair cutting, styling, and shaving techniques, with a focus on precision and client satisfaction.

  • Understand Hair and Scalp Health: Develop a deep understanding of hair and scalp anatomy, disorders, and treatments to ensure you can provide clients with expert advice and care for optimal hair health.

  • Perform Beard Grooming and Design: Acquire specialized skills in facial hair grooming, including beard shaping, trimming, and design, to create personalized and fashionable looks for clients.

  • Adhere to Safety and Sanitation Standards: Learn and apply all necessary health and safety regulations, including proper sterilization and sanitation techniques, to protect the health of clients and maintain a professional workspace.

  • Cultivate Client Relations and Professionalism: Build strong communication and customer service skills to ensure positive interactions with clients, understanding their needs, and delivering exceptional service in a professional manner.

  • Prepare for a Successful Career in Barbering: Develop business knowledge, including salon management, marketing, and financial planning, to confidently enter and grow in the barbering industry as a licensed professional.

 

California State Board Certification Requirements

Laws & Regulations

Study of the Barbering Act, including state board rules and regulations governing the professional practice of barbering.

Barbering-Related Chemistry

Understanding the chemical composition and effects of hair products used in barbering, such as hair dyes, chemical relaxers, and shampoos, with a focus on safe application and product handling.

Health and Safety/Hazardous Substances

Training on safe practices involving hazardous substances commonly used in barbershops, including chemicals, and adherence to health and safety laws. Includes an understanding of ergonomics, sanitation procedures, and the prevention of diseases.

Theory of Electricity in Barbering

Understanding the use of electrical tools in barbering (e.g., clippers, trimmers), including the nature of electrical current and safe operation practices for electrical equipment.

Disinfection and Sanitation

Emphasis on proper procedures to maintain sanitation standards, including the disinfection of all tools and equipment in accordance with Section 979 and 980. These procedures are reinforced throughout the training program to protect both the barber and the client.

Bacteriology, Anatomy, and Physiology

Study of the structure of hair, skin, and scalp to ensure safe and effective barbering services. Includes knowledge of common scalp conditions and their treatments.

Haircutting and Styling

Training in traditional and modern haircutting techniques for men, including scissor and clipper cuts, fading, and styling techniques, with hands-on practice on live models.

Shaving and Beard Design

Instruction in facial hair grooming, including hot towel shaves, straight razor techniques, and designing beards and mustaches for clients, emphasizing precision and safety.

Additional Training

Includes salon management, professional ethics, client communication, salesmanship, and business practices such as record keeping and marketing.
